Unit 2: Memoirs
They Cage the Animals at Night
During our memoir unit, students read They Cage the Animals at Night. They will create audio presentations in which they put themselves in the shoes of Jennings Burch, from the autobiography They Cage the Animals at Night. In this presentation, which is called the Wax Museum presentation, students will be taught how to take their presentation and create a QR code for it. With a QR code, students can scan the code and watch or listen to each others' presentations.
Students also wrote their own memoirs. Some of the writing skills they focused on included: dialogue, sensory details, and figurative language. They needed to make sure that the memoir they wrote included a lesson they learned or an explanation of how the experience changed them.
